It's hard to listen to these and not be taken back to that bizarre time in my life. It's really scary, now that I think about it. Some of these songs were oddly prescient, most notably "Heaven" by Bryan Adams, "Everytime You Go Away" by Paul Young and "A View to a Kill" by Duran Duran, and even to a certain extent "Angel" by Madonna. I hadn't even really thought of that until I saw this chart. It's hard to believe that, as of Sunday (July 8), my brother will have been gone as many years as he lived. It was not a good time in my family's life, not a good time in my life, either. So most of the songs in this era, and from most of July, get tangled up in everything I was feeling, or not feeling (I was more numb and dazed than anything else), at the time. Ten days after the date of this chart, my younger brother died at age 21, eight days before his 22nd birthday, of a rare form of cancer. On a very hot day in South Bend, Indiana, where I was living at the time, I spent the day alternately watching MTV and later ABC and listening to the radio to catch every moment I could.
